TURKEY’S NATURAL DISASTER: SCAMMER’S HOTSPOT

It’s not uncommon for nations to seek help after a tragic event, especially a natural disaster that cost thousands of lives and destroyed many businesses. Many people look forward to charitable acts from other nations, and this common act is not alien cybercriminals aiming to take advantage of the situation.

Some days after the earthquake in Turkey, internet fraudsters have already begun exploiting the situation by disguising themselves as humanitarian services providers seeking funds to rescue victims of the situation and help restore things to a better state in Turkey. One of the recently discovered scams is the case of an imposter posing to represent the Ukrainian Charity Foundation and seeking funds to help victims of the natural disaster get back their lives. The scammer said the funds would be used for medical supplies and the building of new homes for thousands of people who have now become homeless with no hope of getting shelter soon.

It has also been discovered that some other threat actors are following the same techniques by setting up convincing websites solely for getting donations from all over the world in the guise of providing medical aid to earthquake victims in Turkey. The plea for charitable donations is becoming the fastest-rising scam that has hit many people and will still hit more in the coming months if nothing is done to prevent it.

Conclusively, Threat actors have been taking advantage of people’s desire to access authentic information and footage of the earthquake site to spread misinformation and send several phishing emails to people for malicious purposes.
